Extended Play: February 2017

Here are some additional tracks to accompany the reading in the February 2017 issue.

Track 1, Pharrell Williams’ “Runnin’,” is one of his new compositions for the film Hidden Figures, mentioned in the news item on his recent visit to a New York City middle school.

Tracks 2-8 offer some examples of the music described in “Electronica Origins.” Track 2 is an example of early funk, Tracks 3-5 are selections from the Chicago house scene, and Tracks 6-8 are selections from the Detroit techno scene.

Tracks 9-14 were picked to accompany “Offbeat Notation.” Track 9 is an example of music that may have been written in tablature in the Baroque period. Tracks 10 and 11 are examples of jazz standards that would be circulated in lead sheets and fake books. And Tracks 12-14 (which include the track posted below the playlist) sample a range of graphic notation.

Track 15 is a piece performed by flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia that features the cajón.
