Extended Play: March 2018

Here are some additional tracks to accompany the reading in the March 2018 issue.

Track 1 was selected from the soundtrack to Black Panther.

Tracks 2-8 were selected for their relevance to “Classical Revolutions, Pt. 3: From Impressionism to Modernism.” The selections begin with the Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel, then move to Modernist composers Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Stravinsky, and Varése.

Tracks 9-15 were selected for their relevance to “The Trumpet Family Tree.” The Bach selection features a part played by a piccolo trumpet. Don Cherry, known for his use of the pocket trumpet, plays a cornet on “This Is the Bomb.” The selection from Wagner’s Das Rheingold features bass trumpet. Joe Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Dizzy Gillespie all provide examples of trumpet performance through the jazz age. Wynton Marsalis, a proficient trumpeter in jazz and classical, is included here performing a classical piece.

Track 16 was selected as an example of the Carter Family repertoire.
