The Spirit of ’95

Twenty years ago, popular music was dominated by artists who sold records in quantities that now seem almost unimaginable, and many of those records remain hugely influential today.

Alanis Morissette, the Smashing Pumpkins, Tupac Shakur, Selena, TLC … 1995’s most celebrated artists loom over today’s pop landscape like Mount Rushmore, which is why we devoted four pages of our November issue to the music of that year. Three classic ’95 tracks are featured in our Hear the Music playlist; a lot more can be found in our Extended Play section. And here’s a trio of notable videos from two decades past. First up, “Just a Girl,” with Gwen Stefani fronting the California ska-punk sensation No Doubt.

Next is “1979,” one of several hits from the Smashing Pumpkins’ double-disc extravaganza Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

And finally, the official video for “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio. The woman in many of the shots is actress Michelle Pfeiffer, star of the 1995 movie Dangerous Minds, which featured this song.
