Theater Dreams

In “The Road to Broadway,” we addressed a lot of things that you can do during the school year. But there are also tons of performing arts camps, programs, and workshops that take place during the summer. Each of these camps offer something unique, whether it’s the location, depth of offering, small camp sizes, after-school hours, or something else. Here are a few options to get you started:

  • Broadway in the Mountains is a new two-week summer intensive that is a sleep-away performance camp for ages 10-16. It takes place in the Catskill Mountains of New York. There are daily classes in dance, voice, and drama. Students practice and perform scenes and songs from Broadway shows specifically chosen to challenge young performers. On the last day of camp, there is a showcase open to industry professionals, family, and friends. (no audition required)
  • Camp Broadway is a nationwide 1-week summer performing arts program for ages 10-17 offering multiple locations in Georgia, upstate New York, Florida, South Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas and in New York City. This program helps students to develop confidence, character, and presentation skills through ensemble performance. All participants go through an active rehearsal process using the script and score of a popular Broadway show. There are daily classes (8:30am-5:30pm), workshops, and Q&As with professional performers. The program ends with a musical showcase for family and friends. (no audition required, all experience levels)
  • Broadway Artists Alliance (aka BAA) in New York City offers 4 different musical theater summer sessions for ages 10-21. This program is recommended for students who already have a strong technical foundation. Students will choose their own “major” (a focus on voice, acting, or dance) and will select classes to develop their triple-threat skills. They will participate in advanced masterclasses, private coaching, and will perform in a final industry showcase with a solo piece. (must audition live or with a video submission; for advanced students)
  • The New York Film Academy (aka NYFA) offers multiple musical theater summer camps for teens domestically in New York City, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, and Florida, and internationally in Australia and in France. Each session offering dependents upon the chosen location. Students are split into two age groups: ages 10-13 and ages 14-17. Performers take daily classes in acting technique, various styles of dance, voice studio lab, and prep for a final showcase performance. Students will rehearse solo, duo, and ensemble songs and scenes. (no audition required)
